Renters don⤙t tend to think about what would happen to them if they had a flood, a fire or some other issue with their home that caused damage to their possessions. The landlord is not concerned since they own the property and have insurance on the actual building, but what about your stuff? If you haven⤙t looked into getting insurance on your belongings the answer could be that your stuff is gone forever!
If you don⤙t have insurance it might be because you think you don⤙t have enough stuff to insure. What happens if there is a fire and you cannot live in the property? Do you think the home owner is going to decide to you can move in with them? A fall off your deck could mean a lawsuit for medical costs. Now that would be a scary thought if you weren⤙t insured! Can you see why this is something worth looking into?
What you are charged for insurance is based on the following: The deductable, the amount of coverage you want, if you have had any previous claims, the area the home is in and sometime other factors.
Actual cash value and replacement cost also factor in. choosing actual cash value means that anything that needs to be replaced will be given a dollar amount based on what they are worth at that point in time. If your stove is 20 years old it⤙s obviously not worth what a six month old stove would be. So the amount of money you get for each would vary.
Replacement cost is more helpful. If you chose this you would get the money need to replace the damaged item. The items do have to be similar though.
Another thing to think about when deciding on insurance is anything of unusual value. You would need to disclose expensive items like art, jewellery or other valuables if you want them to be covered under your policy.
When comparing insurance prices make sure to call around. You can often get a discount if you go with the company you already have another policy with.
It is not the law in most areas to have this insurance, but I think you will agree after reading this that it is a good idea. A call to an insurance broker is a great next step if you are currently renting without insurance.
